About the project

“I’m starting with a great creative excitement”, wrote A. Khachaturian on the first page of “Spartacus” ballet score.

In 1968 for the third time in ballet history, the great choreographer Yuri Grigorovich staged “Spartacus” in Bolshoy Theatre. Though he christened the ballet as “a performance for four soloists and a corps de ballet”, it should be mentioned that “Spartacus” was written in modern music language and except the personal characteristics there are common, public ones, as the public itself is the central figure, a leading hero of the performance.

Last year, in consequence of the meeting with famed choreographer Yuri Grigorovich, initiated by the Ministry of Culture of Armenia the parties agreed on performing “Spartacus” ballet in Armenia on the stage of the National Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre after Al. Spendiaryan.

Legendary choreographer demonstrated his willingness to contribute his share in that noble undertaking. The realization of the project was taken up by Art Team Company. The choreographer acquainted with the troupe of Yerevan Opera and Ballet Theatre, representatives of State Dance Ensemble of Armenia, “Friendship” and the students from the Yerevan State Choreographic School. The very dancing “cluster” Yuri Grigorovich worked with, the very pleiad of talented ballet-dancers commemorated the new chapter in the “life” of “Spartacus” –– the revival of the ballet in its author’s homeland.
